DIRECTORS AND ACTIVITIES
Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias, based in Caernarfon, was established
in 1999 as a Centre for music. A registered company limited
by guarantee, it has charitable status, and is managed by
a Board of Directors, now chaired by Dafydd Whittall, following Professor Eric Sunderland's retirement.
The Patron is Yvonne Mathias, the composer's widow.
The other Directors are: Angharad Anwyl,
Rhiannon Mathias, Howel Roberts,
Marian Wyn Jones, Ann Marston, David Joyner, Wynne Roberts, Geraint Davies, Judith Humphries, and Elinor
Bennett. Meinir Llwyd Jones
is the Administrator, assisted by Mari Roberts. Howel Roberts
(ex-manager of Midland Bank) is the Financial Director.
Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias is funded by grants from the
Arts Council of Wales and donations from the Friends of the
Canolfan. We are based at Galeri, Caernarfon's new Arts Centre.
The core work of the Canolfan is individual instrumental and
voice tuition for all ages, as well as various group workshops
and classes. Over 300 students aged from 2 to 75 attend the
Centre on a weekly basis with 30 teachers offering tuition on a
range of instruments.
Masterclasses are organised and, in the past, distinguished
musicians have been invited to give classes e.g. Ingrid Surgenor,
Iwan Llywelyn Jones, Gareth Roberts, Skaila Kanga and Mary
Lloyd Davies.
Two new and very successful projects are the Pre-School Music
Classes for 2 and 3 year olds, and the Creative Music Course
for Adults with Learning Disabilities, (Hidden Talents).
Gwasanaeth Ysgolion William Mathias (responsible for the schools
peripatetic Music Service for the counties of Ynys Mon, Gwynedd
and Denbigh) is also based in Galeri, under the direction
of Dennis Williams.
